Can Attending a Retreat Support My Mental & Physical Health?

Guest Author: Now & Zen Collective

A note from Heather: I attended my first Now & Zen Collective Retreat in 2022 (ish) and I’ve been to at least 8 of them since then. Retreating with this group has been like a grown up camp where I get to be silly while also learning new things, coming back to some abandoned practices, and to connect with friends who also frequent the retreats. That once a year catch-up really helped to provide me with a sense of community that really did shape the way I connect with my place of residence.

THE CASE FOR RETREATING

A weekend away isn't just an escape, it's an opportunity to combat burnout, embrace play and reconnect with yourself.

When was the last time you did something simply because it brought you joy?

Not because it was productive. Not because it checked another box on your to do list. Not because someone else needed you.

Just because it made you smile.

For many women, that answer takes a little while to find.

Between work, family, caregiving, relationships, endless notifications, and the invisible mental load we carry each day, it's easy to lose touch with ourselves. We become experts at showing up for everyone else while quietly putting our own needs, passions, and sense of play on hold.

Over time, that can leave us feeling drained. Not just physically, but emotionally too.

A good night's sleep or a vacation can certainly help us catch up on rest. But burnout isn't always about being tired.

Sometimes it's about feeling disconnected from yourself.

Maybe you've noticed you're less patient than you used to be. The things that once lit you up don't feel quite the same. You can't remember the last time you laughed until your stomach hurt, felt fully present, or did something simply because it sounded fun.

The good news is that reconnecting with yourself doesn't always require a complete life makeover. Sometimes what we need most is an intentional pause. A chance to step away from the noise, settle our nervous system, and remember who we are outside of our responsibilities.

That's where retreats offer something truly special.

MORE THAN A WEEKEND AWAY

At Now & Zen Collective, we've always believed a retreat isn't about escaping your life. It's about returning to yourself.

It's a chance to step away from the constant demands of everyday life and into an environment that gently invites you to slow down. Someone else prepares the meals. Your calendar isn't running the show. Your phone naturally spends a little more time tucked away. Your only real job is to notice what you need.

Maybe that's movement that helps release tension you've been carrying.

Maybe it's meaningful conversation that reminds you you're not carrying everything alone.

Maybe it's sitting quietly by the lake with a cup of tea while your nervous system finally gets a chance to exhale.

Maybe it's an afternoon nap without feeling even a tiny bit guilty. Imagine that!

Whatever it is, there's space for it.

Because there is no "right" way to retreat.

THE POWER OF PLAY

As children, we played because it felt good.

We explored. We created. We laughed until our stomachs hurt.

Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped giving ourselves permission to do those things unless there was a purpose attached to them.

But joy doesn't need to be earned.

Research continues to show that spending time in nature, moving our bodies, cultivating meaningful social connections, and engaging in activities we genuinely enjoy can help reduce stress and support our overall well being. When we combine those experiences together, something beautiful happens. We begin to feel more like ourselves again.

Sometimes that's dancing without worrying who's watching.

Sometimes it's laughing over a good meal.

Sometimes it's paddling across a quiet lake, trying something new, or watching the sunset with a group of women who were strangers just a day ago.

These moments might seem simple, but they're exactly the kinds of experiences that chronic stress slowly pushes out of our lives.

It's not about becoming someone new.

It's about reconnecting with the version of yourself that's been there all along.

COMMUNITY THAT FEELS NATURAL

One of our favourite things about retreat weekends isn't something we can schedule or plan for. It's the connections that naturally happen along the way.

They happen while you're making your morning coffee, walking down to the lake, laughing over dinner, or setting up for a movement class. They happen during a workshop, on a hike, or in those little in between moments that often become the ones people remember most.

One concern we hear all the time is, "I don't really like talking in groups."

Don't worry, we get it.

There is never any pressure to share if you don't want to. Our sharing circles are always an invitation, never an expectation. You are welcome to simply listen, or even take some quiet time for yourself and skip this part completely if it’s not your jam.

But here's what we've witnessed time and time again.

There is something incredibly powerful about hearing someone else's story and quietly thinking, "Me too."

When someone else feels seen, heard, and understood, it often reminds us that we deserve those things too.

It's a gentle reminder that we're far more alike than we sometimes realize. That the worries we carry, the pressure we put on ourselves, and the feeling that we're somehow the only one struggling are often shared by many women sitting in the very same circle.

And somehow, that realization makes the load feel just a little bit lighter.

AN INVITATION TO SLOW DOWN

If you've been feeling stretched thin, overwhelmed, or like you've somehow lost touch with yourself, perhaps you don't need another productivity hack.

Maybe you need permission to pause.

To rest without guilt.

To play without purpose.

To reconnect with nature, with community, and with yourself.

Burnout has a funny way of convincing us that we've changed. That we're less joyful, less creative, less patient, or somehow less ourselves.

But often those parts of us aren't gone at all. They've simply been buried beneath responsibilities, expectations, and constantly putting ourselves last.

Retreating creates the space to uncover them again.

To laugh more, breathe a little deeper and to reconnect with what lights you up.

And then you leave feeling lighter, calmer, and a little more like yourself than you did when you arrived.

If that sounds like something you've been craving, we'd love to welcome you.

Our upcoming Golden Bliss Retreat @ Bloom Holistic Retreat Center is designed to offer exactly that. A weekend filled with movement, nourishing meals, meaningful connection, time in nature, deep rest, and the freedom to experience it all in whatever way feels right for you.

We hope you'll join us.
